Russian language - Letter A

Russian language alphabet - letter А  is a vowel, under stress it's pronounced as 'a' in 'father', when it is not stressed it has a reduced sound, for example - собàка (stressed), дéвочка (unstressed). All the rules on this page are going to be related to Russian language alphabet - letter A.

Russian language alphabetIn cases when A is unstressed it is difficult to distinguish either we have to write  A or O.  So, you can check it, using different form of this word. For example, for word вода we can use an adjective of this word, where O is stressed -  вòдный.  If the word, you are struggling with, is a verb in imperfective aspect; don't use perfective aspect (with suffixes -ыва-, -ива- ) to check it. For example зарабòтать - зарабáтывать, as you see the vowels are different, but both of them are correct). Russian language - exceptions


Russian language alphabet-гар-, -гор-

We write O for unstressed vowel and A if the vowel is stressed. For example - гарь, загар – stressed and гореть, загорелый – unstressed. There are some exceptions – пригарь, гаревой, гаревый.

-зар-, -зор-

We write A for unstressed vowel and A or O if the vowel is stressed. For example, заря, озарить, озарение – unstressed and зарево, лучезарный, зори (plural of заря) - stressed.

 

-клан-, -клон-

We write O, when vowel is unstressed and A orwhen it is stressed, For example, поклониться, наклонить, склониться, преклонение, склонение – unstressed and поклон, наклон, наклониться, кланяться, непреклонный – stressed.

-крап-, -кроп-

We write O and A for unstressed and A for stressed. For example, окропить, окроплённый – unstressed and крапина, крапинка – stressed.

 

-пай-, -пой-

А – unstressed and stressed and O – stressed: паять, запаять, паяльник; запаянный, спайка, припой, напой.

 

Russian language - complicated exceptions

-лаг-, лог-, -лож-

For unstressed vowel before Г we write О and  before Ж we write  А. For stressed vowel we  always write O. For example - излагать, предполагать, безотлагательный, прилагательное – unstressed; заложить, изложить, отножить, положить, положение, изложение, предложение – unstressed; налог, залог, положит, положенный – stressed.

-мак-, -мок-, -моч-

In words with meaning  dip for unstressed vowel before К we write А (обмокнуть, макать). We use O for words with meaning to get wet, wet and to get dry  (намокать, отмокать, промокать, мокрый, мокроватый, промокуть).Before Ч we always write O (мочить, намочи, промочу, смачивать, вымачивать).

-кас-, -кос-

In this case we write A if the following vowel is A (касаться), in the rest of cases we write O. For example, касаться, прикасатьсяА and  коснуться, прикоснуться, соприкосновение, неприкосновенный(these roots are never stressed)

 -плав-, - плов-

We write A and O for unstressed, but just A for stressed: плавучий, плавник, поплавок, плавун, сплавливать; пловец, пловчиха; плавать, лесосплав.

-равн-, -ровн-

We write A for words with meaning - одинаковый, равнять (the same, to level). For example - равнять, равный, равняться, сравнение, уравнение, exceptions - поровну, ровесник. We write O for words with meaning - ровный, ровнять (smooth, level). For example - ровнять, разровнять, выровнять, exception - равнина. For words with unclear meaning (could suit for both groups) – we write A (равнять, равнение, подравняться, выровняться), letter O we write for - не ровён час, уровень.

 

Russian language - some more exceptions

 

-рос(т)-, -рас(т)-, -ращ-

When the vowel is unstressed we write O before С if there is no T, which follows letter С . For example - росла, росли, вырос, выросший, заросль, exceptions – words отрасль, отраслевой, межотраслевой, многоотраслевой. We write letter A before –ст-. For example - расту, расти, растить, подрасти, вырасти, возраст, растение, exceptions – росток, ростовой, вырост, ростовщик, выростной, выросток, заросток, прорость, подростковый.  We always write A before Щ. For example - ращу, выращу, выращенный, приращать, наращение, сращение. When the vowel before С is stressed we write О. For example - рост, нарост, отросток, подросток, переросток, рос, зарос, подросший, рослый.

-скак-, -скок-, скач – скоч

 If the ending of the root is letter K and the vowel is stressed, we write letter О. For example - скок, наскок, отскок, соскок. To determine the vowel for verbs with ending –ивать we use the same way as we do for words without exceptions. For example - наскакивать, the vowel we are looking at is stressed, so we can hear properly, that it is A. If the ending of the root is Ч, we write letter A for all forms of word скакать (скачу, скачи, обскачи, поскачу, also word – скачок). You can check it, using these words - скачет, поскачем,скачка, вскачь. For words with prefixes, which are ending on –скочить  we write letter O. For example - вскочить, вскочу, вскочи, выскочить, выскочу, выскочи, соскочить, подскочить, also in word выскочка. You can check it using the same way – выскочить, вскочит, соскочат.  проскачу, проскачи (проскакать, проскачет), подскачу, подскачи (подскакать, подскачет) and подскачу, подскачи (подскочить, подскочит).

-твор-, -твар-

When the vowel is unstressed we write Oтворить, творение, творец, сотворённый, вытворять. When the vowel  is stressed we write O and A (творческий, творчество, тварь, тварный).

Russian language prefixes

Prefixes раз-, рас- and роз-, рос. Despite the rules, we don't check these words using different forms. When the vowel in these prefixes is unstressed we use A, when it is stressed - O. For example for word разыгрaть we would use noun рòзыгрыш, because in this case the vowel we are looking at is stressed, but we put A instead, according the rule for prefixes раз-, рас- and роз-, рос.

 




Russian language compound words

Compound words. In words, with the first part сорока-, полутора-, полутораста-  we use A. For example: полуторатонный, полуторагодовалуый, сорокалетие, сорокачасовой, though in word сороконожка we use O).

 

Russian language some spelling rules

There are some words you can't check, because in all forms this certain vowel is unstressed (for example - собака, коридор, тарелка, ураган, ананас). In these cases just check the spelling, using dictionary.

In most cases if the following letter after consonant is A , not Я - it shows that a consonant is hard (for example - радость, ряд).

As you see, all these rules will help you to write words with letter A without mistakes, you just have to learn them.

Here is one more rule - after ж, ч, ш, щ, ц you are going to write A, not Я, for example - час, площадка there are some exceptions - foreign words (for example - Шяуляй).
