Burning doors Belarus Free Theatre London

Burning doors Belarus Free Theatre London is one of the leading refugee-led theatre company in the UK.  Also it is the only theatre in Europe banned by its government on political grounds.

Once again you have very good opportunity to meet Russian community and practice your speaking skills.

Burning Doors gives you clear understanding of how people are treated in some countries, it draws on the company’s own experience of political oppression and continues their campaign to stand up for artistic freedom and human rights across the globe, reminding us, once again, that theatre can be a revolutionary art.

Burning Doors

Their new performance explores the individual stories of persecuted artists living under dictatorships in their countries. These include Russian artist Petr Pavlensky, imprisoned Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and Maria Alyokhina, famous for her radical protests as part of punk group Pussy Riot.

In this amazingly contemporary new work, Belarus Free Theatre combine forces with Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina to share stories of persecuted artists, living under dictatorship, who will not be silenced. Belarus Free Theatre are banned in their native country.

Burning Doors interrogates what happens to people when they are declared enemies of the state simply for making art. How the meaning of home and displacement reframes under systematic coercion and ideological warfare.

This brand new production blends sensuous theatricality and vigorous physicality to shine a light on total suppression of artistic freedoms, drawn from the real-life stories of iconoclastic Russian performance artist Petr Pavlensky, incarcerated Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina.

Each performance is followed by a post-show discussion with the artists and special guests (up to one hour).

Created in partnership with ArtReach as part of Journeys Festival International. Contains nudity and scenes of a graphic nature.
